Dice Control In Casino Craps
Thursday, 21. July 2023

The concept of “Dice Control” or “Dice Setting” is a Craps strategy where players shoot the dice in such a precise way as to influence the outcome of the game. The idea that one can shoot the dice across a table, bounce them off the far wall of the table and have them land with the desired number showing seems next to impossible; however, there is a fairly small yet very dedicated group of Craps enthusiasts that swear by it. For those players that are able to reach a certain level of mastery at this skill ostensibly elevate Craps from a game of chance to a game of skill, much like pool or darts. As dedicated as the small group of Craps players that use this strategy is, most casino enthusiasts don’t see Dice Control as a viable strategy for overcoming the house advantage.

Utilizing Dice Control as a strategy goes beyond just holding the dice in a particular manner. Players are required to hold the dice in a particular way, throw at an exact speed with accuracy and also control the angle that they land just in front of the far wall of the Craps table. In addition, the dice should just gently touch the far wall of the Craps table in order to increase the probability that they will remain on the same axis. If executed correctly, this strategy can go a very long way to put the odds of the game in the favor of the player.

While there is no shortage of doubters of Dice Control as a useable strategy, most people would agree that it is possible to utilize the strategy in instances where the dice are not required to bounce off the far wall of the Craps table. This is called the “army blanket roll.” In World War II, US soldiers used to play dice games on their army blankets, hence the name. The idea is that players set the dice on a particular axis and gently roll the dice down the table. If the toss is successful then the dice will not move off their axis and will come to rest just before they hit the back wall. Unfortunately, most casinos require that the dice hit the back wall in order for a throw to be considered valid. When considering that the surface of crap table walls are covered with little rubber pyramid shapes, it is somewhat difficult to fathom how one could control the outcome of a throw to any significant degree.

Jerry Patterson, Chris Pawlicki and Stanford Wong are undoubtedly the most outspoken advocates of Dice Control in Craps. Patterson and Pawlicki co-developed what is known as the Patterson Rhythm Roll in 1997 and is considered the first methodology for developing this skill.

Dice Control is not some strategy that one can learn over the course of an afternoon and requires years of training before one can influence the outcome of dice throws, if ever. Scientific experiments have been conducted with regards to Dice Control and the results were not conclusive. The truth is that very few players view Dice Control as a viable strategy and casinos do not even regard the strategy as worthy of their attention. That having been said, this is a strategy that can payoff for the player in spades.
